Quotations
of people who have already seen it:
Gene
Anderson:
"Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant."
Gaetan
Bloom:
Some years ago Gene Anderson revolutionized our small world with his extremely visual restoration of a torn newspaper. Since then, a good number of magicians have tried to improve his system, using new technologies with more or less success. In this area, Axel’s version surpasses everything I have seen to date. Not only is the effect absolutely clean from beginning to end, without any suspicious moves, but the final phase is pure magic and to crown everything the DVD is also a little jewel, with all essential details and full of humor. Of course, there is work to be done but true miracles have their price and in this case everything is justified.
It must be gulped urgently!!!
One has to be crazy to overlook it.
In short I was torn apart and I am not yet completely restored!
A short FAQ:
Can I use any Newspaper?
No / Yes - The size or format is not important. The paper fibre direction of your Newspaper has to be vertical. Otherwise the tearing is not easy to do.
How long can I use a gimmick?
A gimmick works a thousands of times.
You can order additional gimmicks, if you like to prepare more than one copy at the same time.
Is Newsflash easy to do?
Yes, it is also easy to learn - BUT it takes a little time.
If you invest two days to learn Newsflash, you will be happy how easy it is to perform.
How long does the preparation takes?
I need 10 minutes for a new copy and 3 minutes for a reset.

Review by Dean Montalbano
on the magic café (December 2008)
I am not a lover of the DVD medium for learning magic. I prefer books, plain and simple. I read much faster than most people talk, and would rather study a good still picture or photo than have to rewind through video over and over. I know the “public” likes them and as a publisher myself I definitely see the economic benefits as DVDs are cheap to reproduce.
I DO love really visual magic. There are certain effects in magic I consider to be as “pure “ and real looking as they get. Examples: Any Hot Rod, done well. The Needle Through the Arm. The Professor’s Nightmare. The Buzz Saw Illusion (Ala Blackstone). The Gene Anderson Newspaper Tear. Why? Because they are pure. They LOOK like magic. There is no Fudgy-ness for people to remember and notice, or very little. They are visual. You see the magic happen in front of your eyes.
Often people try to “improve” on these items and end up with something needlessly more complicated, convoluted, with newer bigger bulkier gimmicks. (Does the Hot Rod need to be mechanical? Does the Buzz saw table need to be 9 feet wider? Is Professor’s Nightmare better with magnetic gimmicked ropes?)
Let us consider the Anderson Newspaper Tear… There have been several “Improvements” on it, none of which, in my opinion only, warranted marketing them and none of which really made any drastic improvement on the original, which I performed for 15 years when all I did was magic. I would often read of “new” newspaper tears and look at them and then come right back to the Anderson Tear. It is simple. It is visual it looks like real magic. (One notable exception- the Osterlind Signed Newspaper tear which I think is brilliant AND which gives you the ability to REPEAT the paper tear for the same audience, and actually both entertain and fool them. Use Anderson- or better yet as you will read shortly News Flash- first, then later follow it with Osterlind’s.)
Ah… But then along came News Flash. I watched the demo, (www.axelhecklau.com) read the hype and have to say became child-like in my delight at seeing something that I thought made the Anderson Tear look even MORE MAGICAL….
But wait… I need to make this clear from the start. News Flash really is something NEW. It has similarities in appearances to the Anderson Tear, but the method, folds, gimmick are new and different. Though a “bit” of the gimmick had been applied to the Anderson tear in one of the previous improvements.
If you watch the demo, you will notice right away how delightfully magical it really does look. You tear 8 pages (Two full sheets) 3 times. You end with a pretty sizeable packet of torn sheets which you show in separate hands.
You bring your hands together and chest height and with no “fiddling” something delightfully visual happens. The best way to describe it is that, in a split moment you sort of start to drop the pieces, that is, you let go of them for a second. Then you spread your hands out at shoulder height and the pieces more or less visually melt back together as the paper unfolds and you are left holding the paper in normal reading position.
OK- so what’s better? Cleaner handling! Less tearing! Paper is restored at chest height in reading position, in at least one variation it can be done surrounded. The front and back of every single page is shown during the initial display.
Are there any caveats? The gimmick might cause you some issues because of the inherent properties, but no more than many other similar gimmicks you probably already have. The prep takes time, SLIGHTLY more perhaps than the Anderson tear… But it isn’t more difficult per se, just a few more steps. With the standard version, at the end you will not show the front and back of each page. With the surrounded version (Which is just another 2 minutes of prep I would say) you can.
Now- the DVD itself.. and did I mention I really HATE DVD’s? Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
The DVD is made in Germany, so I was a little leery of the language barrier. Axel’s English is perfectly understandable and he does a good job of translating centimeters into English measurements etc..
His explanations were well thought out, easy to see, hear and understand. (I already told him if I had a wish it would be including a printed outline or PDF of the preparation steps so I could consult those rather than pausing the DVD while cutting, folding and gluing.- BUT I also know after 10 or so I remembered the steps just fine.) The filming and editing were great and the navigation and such were also well done.
This DVD is a professionally done piece!
It is also darn funny and fun to watch. Axell has a silly sense of humor that appealed to me, and he made the DVD as entertaining as it was informative. You won’t find yourself dozing.
There is also a really nice flash restoration (You can see it on the demo) using flash string, and I thought that was quite beautiful!
$88 with shipping the US is NOT cheap for a DVD, a trick or a newspaper tear… so I will end with this thought…. If you are new to magic, on a small budget or whatever… Get the Anderson Tear for now, it is a few dollars and it will get you a really nice visual paper tear.
But…. Once you are ready to pop it up a notch, AND once you are proficient enough at what you do to take the time this will take to practice and get the “knack”, then I think you will be most pleased with this new paper tear, News Flash.
Note- this item is currently ONLY available from the inventor.

Straightaway, if you are familiar with this classic effect, you'll
notice how the restored newspaper springs into life, as if being
reborn. It's very fast and it is very magical. This is down to a number
of things; the way the paper unfolds, the handling, the operation of
the gimmick that makes it all work, but ultimately Axel Hecklau's
attention to detail. This is what the Torn and Restored newspaper looks
like after it's been experimented with and refined to perfection. Axel
Hecklau is to this trick what those mad chefs on BBC 2 are to cooking!
The guy is clearly an obsessive - and boy has it paid off!
In the pack you receive a beautifully produced, entertaining and well
shot instructional DVD and the gimmicks (note: there's nothing to wear
out or go wrong here). You'll need to source your own newspapers of
course together with other bits 'n bobs to make up each paper, i.e.
scissors and glue stick. Axel has a clever tip for anyone looking for a
free source of newspapers on the disc.
Although not difficult this effect should be rehearsed until you can do
it virtually blindfolded. It would be a tragedy if this brilliant
version of the Torn and Restored newspaper was ruined by an inept
performer. Your reward will be the reaction of your audiences.
Axel Hecklau has brought new life into this much-loved classic of magic.
Newsflash is outstanding.

Here an alternative handling (same prep.)
Here I perform it with the unusual papersize of US-Today - It works also (with a little adjustment in the setup)
